As they may be longer, have a slower onset and offset, and involve unusual symptoms, these absence seizures are referred to as atypical.
Staring into space, usually with a blank expression, is still how the seizure begins.
Muscle tone and mobility typically alter. You might observe:

  • Frequent blinking that could appear as eyelid fluttering
  • Chewing motions or lip-smacking
  • Using various hand gestures or rubbing fingers together
  • Atypical absence seizures can last up to 20 seconds or longer.

Absence seizure symptoms:

A vacuous stare from a simple absence seizure can be confused with a momentary loss of focus. Although it can last up to 30 seconds, the seizure typically lasts 10 seconds. Following the seizure, there is no headache, drowsiness, or confusion.

What is the treatment of absence seizures?

Anti-seizure medication is used to treat absence seizures. Your doctor will then look at your symptoms and give you the right medicine.

If you don’t do well on drugs, your doctor may recommend the ketogenic diet. This is a high-fat, low-carb food plan. There’s not enough medical data to back up the effectiveness of the ketogenic diet for this type of seizure, but some people do find it helpful.

If symptoms don’t improve with medications and lifestyle changes, a doctor might suggest surgery.

Absence seizures medication:

A health care provider may prescribe one of these drugs to treat absence seizures:

  • Ethosuximide (Zarontin)
  • Lamictal® (lamotrigine)
  • Topamax® (topiramate).
  • Valproate (Depakene®).

seizures are not usually treated with phenobarbital, carbamazepine, gabapentin, pregabalin, and vigabatrin. These could give you convulsions.

Tell your healthcare provider if your symptoms get worse or you get side effects. Perhaps a different medication or a different dose will help.
